Rock and Roll for the Privileged Few?

Last Wednesday I was thrilled to finally get a Verified Fan code to purchase tickets for Springsteen on Broadway. I’ve been a Springsteen fan since about the 8th grade, and I was so excited about this series when it was announced, and I registered for the Verified Fan service as soon as I could. This was the third round of ticketing for the extended Broadway run, but the first time I’d gotten the coveted invitation to buy tickets. I was in the third group allowed to purchase tickets starting at noon.

I was in a meeting I couldn’t get out of that precise moment, but within 15 minutes I was online and trying to get into the site. New York is only 3.5 hours from here, and I have a huge amount of unused vacation time, so I was ready to go any day. I started with my birthday, October 17, looking for tickets for myself and a friend. There were no tickets, so I began trying other dates, especially Wednesdays and Thursdays thinking it might be easier to get tickets for those than Friday or Saturday. Continue reading →

Here’s a good song for Halloween, “Raise the Dead” by Caravan of Thieves.

Caravan of Thieves are a fun band to play at your Halloween party because of songs like Monster, Ghostwriter and Butcher’s Wife that treat appropriately macabre Halloween type themes, but that’s not the only reason.  They’re also a band that celebrates the things that really make a holiday like Halloween fun, dressing up in costume, and letting it bring out your wild side.  To be sure they do their fair share of songs about kind of creepy, macabre themes, but there’s a playfulness to it.  Think more Dia de los Muertos or even Carnival, Mardi Gras or a Gypsy Fair, than crass commercialism, blood and gore!  It’s a party for one and all!  Continue reading →

Life is Good founders Bert and John Jacobs announced from the stage that the festival had exceeded last year’s totals and is close to reaching the goal of $1 million to help children in crisis. Life is Good Festival, Day One

Today was the first day of the the Life is Good Festival in the Blue Hills in Canton, MA.

The festival is a two-day celebration of music and optimism, featuring three stages of diverse live music, hands-on games, interactive arts activities and the “Good Kids” zone — home to the top acts in kids entertainment. The Life is Good Festival is a unique music event that every age group can enjoy.
100% of Life is Good’s profits from the Festival will go towards The Life is good Kids Foundation, helping kids overcome life-threatening challenges such as violence, illness and extreme poverty.

It was a great line up today. I really enjoyed Ozomatli, Mavis Staples and Ben Harper. I liked Dr. Dog, too. But I didn’t get to hear as much of it as I would have liked as I was working as a volunteer and had to get back to the Bocce station!

Thank You for Your Support! Maybe I Can Raise Just a Bit More!

For several months I’ve been working to raise funds for the Life is Good Kids Foundation to support children struggling to overcome life-threatening challenges.  I pledged to raise $1000 and have successfully met that goal, even slightly exceeded it.  Though I’ve not raised it to  $1500 and there is still time to help, I thought it a good time to publicly acknowledge those who’ve helped me so far!  The names below are listed according to the order in which I received their donations.  Those who were the earliest to support me at at the top, and it continues on through the most recent.

Help Support the Life is Good Foundation

I’m in the midst of fundraising for the Life is Good Kids Foundation. I must admit that my reasons for embarking on this venture were selfish. I’m going to the Life is Good Festival down the road a bit in Canton, and you get some special privileges if you raise a certain amounts. But having started on the project, I did some research into the foundation, and I’ve realized what a good cause it is. My enthusiasm is great, independent of the concert.

The Life is good Kids Foundation is an action-oriented nonprofit, committed to helping young children overcome life-threatening challenges such as extreme poverty, violence, illness and natural disasters. Our Playmakers Initiative provides training, resources and support to the adults dedicated to caring for these children so that all involved lead healthier, more joyful lives.
