Almost a month ago I caught the last night of a three night series of Lucero shows at the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. The band played an acoustic set followed by an electric set. At one point front man Ben Nichols joked that it did seem a little “self-indulgent to be your own opening act,” and it certainly could have been, but not with a band like Lucero. They’re not the only band to try this format recently, but it worked particularly well for them!
The structure of the show allowed them to do a set that highlighted songwriting and musicianship. That’s not to say it was low-key. It was pretty high energy, but just not so amped. The second set was electric, loud, and added two very impressive horn players to the ensemble of musicians on stage. I thoroughly enjoyed both sets. My only complaint was that the break between sets seemed quite long. They’re the kind of band you want to play on and on, even if it’s a Sunday night and you have to be at work the next day.
