Viva Laughlin on CBS is getting mediocre reviews and dismal ratings, but I thought the first episode was absolutely brilliant and I loved every minute of it! The central character is Ripley Holden, an eternal optimist and risk taker with a great personality who bet it all on his dream of opening a casino. But just before the scheduled opening his financing falls through and things get complicated. Interesting characters and an engaging plot kept things interesting.
But what I really loved was the way people just burst into song at key moments. Some may think this is silly, but my life has a soundtrack and it plays in my head as I go about my day. It is composed of songs I’ve heard here and there and it works a lot like the music in the show. Sometimes I actually sing or slide my feet a step or two in time with the soundtrack. The people in this show take that a bit further, bursting out into full song and dance, but it works and it is fun to watch.

The show’s got a good cast, too. PBS or BBC America viewers like myself may recognize the series lead Lloyd Owen from his roles in Monarch of the Glen, Coupling, Wire in the Blood…. He’s quite a talented actor and he’s good in this part. Charismatic, handsome, and sexy, but in an ordinary, man next door kind of way. Hugh Jackman does flamboyant, over the top performances pretty well, and this show is no exception. Melanie Griffith is pretty great as Bunny Baxter, too.
