It is a huge continent composed of 46 countries, 47 if you count Wester Sahara as independent, and 53 it you count all the island nations off its coast, Comoros, Mauritius, Cabo Verde… Among those there are places making progress toward democracy or where poverty is not so widespread and economies are less precarious. Overall, though, Africa has lots of terrible problems, the likes of which pale in comparison to most other continents. Whether it is ethnic strife, advancing desertification, corruption, authoritarian government, economic, educational or healthcare challenges, natural disasters, or some combination thereof, the continent has its share of problems and then some. So let’s assume you want to help and that, like most of us, you are unable, unwilling or unqualified to simply go to an African country and help tackle a problem yourself. If you were to give money to help the people of Africa, where would you want it to go? Save Darfur to help victims of the atrocities there? One Laptop per Child to help development by improving the technology skills of children so they can better compete in the global era? The One Campaign, to fight poverty and AIDS, still more devastating in Africa than it was at its height in North America? Doctors without Borders to get medical assistance to those in need? UNICEF, the UN Food program for needy children? The International Red Cross, which goes in after wars and disasters? Oxfam? The Heifer Project? Bread for the World? Maybe a church group doing humanitarian work.
