Christ Out of Christmas?

largely won out in most places. But “taking Christ out of Christmas never a real issue. Take it from me, a guy that is far from religious, there is no escaping very public expressions of Christianity for pretty much the entire month of December. There are the Christmas episodes of the regular television series, the Christmas specials, the religious movies, the decorations, etc. Most of these are overtly religious and those which aren’t are subtly so. Even in the liberal Northeast it is not unusual to find nativity scenes on the public squares of many towns. Even the post office issues stamps of the Madonna and Child. And try finding a corder of the United States where Christmas Carols don’t float around in the air. There perfunctory nods toward Hanukah during December, but basically it is all about Christmas and Christ is much a part of it.

Would that it were less so!]]>
