Federal Debt is Not Analagous to Household Debt!

It’s late and I’m tired, but another TV pundit once again used the example of the family budget to assert that the federal government ought to have to live within its means in exactly the same way that the American family does.  This time it was David Gergen on some PBS or ABC show.  I can’t remember, because I wasn’t really watching.  Someone else had turned it on, and I just heard it.
I am so sick of this analogy.  It simply doesn’t work for a number of reasons:
1) It’s based on a false premise.  Most American households carry debt, be it a mortgage, student loans, car payment, credit card debt or something else.  Ideally this is planned and the family can keep up with payments, but far too often that is not the case.  So many people live paycheck to paycheck.

Open Letter to DNC re: Health Care Reform. Listen to Jon Stewart

To the Democratic National Committee:
I can’t tell you how much reading something like this which appeared on the USA Today site makes me.

Critical condition. Life support. Code red.Any kind of medical cliche can be used to describe the state of President Obama's health care initiative. The election of Republican Scott Brown to the Senate gives the GOP the power to block a final health care bill, so the Obama White House and the Democrats are scrambling to figure out what they can do — if anything.
via Obama and health care: Critical condition

If you allow this single victory to derail legislation that should be a priority for the Democrats, then you will have proven yourself a truly failed leadership.  Let me refer you to the following clip from The Daily Show.

Why Men Marry Men, According to Rush

Periodically some outrageous clip from Media Matters comes my way. I try to resist looking at them. Unless they are cushioned by the humor of The Daily Show or The Colbert Report, they just depress me. But every once in a while I can’t resist and I look at them. They are hilarious! That is until you realize these pundits are serious and people take them seriously.

Is he really serious? Someone who is a fan, tell me. Does he really think that families in which both spouses work they do so just to keep up with taxes and not the rising costs of gasoline, health care, groceries, education, utilities, bank fees and who knows what else? I’m single, so maybe I don’t understand at all. If your married and your spouse works, is it because of taxes? His final thought is that gay men are getting married for the same reason, the economics of it. If your gay, male and marred and reading this, is that why you’re married? If you can’t get married where you are but would like to, do you want to because you want to marry up?

Why Scott Brown May Win and Why It Shouldn't Matter So Much

The Coakley campaign should never have taken victory in the Massachusetts special election for granted, as many believe they did, at least early on. It’s common that in off year elections the opposition party suffers. Though Massachusetts is said to be a solidly Democratic state, those lines don’t mean as much as they used to, and this is a year in which people are upset about the economy and fired up by a lot of opposition fear mongering on health care reform. It’s always the angry that turn out, especially on a cold, damp day like today. Coakley doesn’t inspire passion. Brown does.
I hope I’m wrong and I’ve voted, marking my vote for Coakley. But even if she’s defeated, it shouldn’t matter as much as pundits are saying it does. Democrats are TERRIBLE strategists. Jon Stewart put it so well last night.

Martha Coakley for Senate

President Obama and Martha Coakley

I’m afraid that I have to admit that I agree with Scott Brown.  The negative campaign ads directed against him by the Coakley campaign have been a bit much. The other night I was watching tv and the negative ads came on, one after the other. Many of them featured a dark ominous voice talking about the terrible things that would happen if Brown got elected. Then Copley herself came on in an ad and, to be honest, her voice seemed just a bit strident and annoying. But don’t be deceived. This election is about substance, not style; Issues, not rhetoric!
The fact is that Scott Brown spouts a lot of general, feel good rhetoric that needs to be interrogated and challenged. Brown accuses his opponents of running ads that attack him but don’t discuss the issues, but where is the discussion of the issues in his ads? He’s endorsed by the Tea Party Patriots. I am opposed to virtually every point in their agenda and think they are a little nuts. If they endorse him, I want to know why. What issues does he agree with them on? The answer is far too many.

Lieberman Less Popular among Connecticut Democrats than Obama among Connecticut Republicans!

According to an article by Sam Stein in the Huffington Post, Joe Lieberman’s popularity ratings in Connecticut have really tanked.

More than 80 percent (81 percent) of Democrats now say they disapprove of the job Lieberman is doing with only 14 percent approving. Among Republicans, 48 percent disapprove of the senator with just 39 approving. And among independents, 61 percent disapprove of Lieberman’s antics with just 32 percent approving.
“It all adds up to a 25% approval rating with 67% of his constituents giving him bad marks,” the study concludes. “Barack Obama’s approval rating with Connecticut Republicans is higher than Lieberman’s with the state’s Democrats.”

The Truth About Obama is…He keeps promises?

It is certainly possible that a rational thinking persona would have problems with the activities and policies of President Obama’s administration.  If philosophically one is a staunch physical conservative, for example.  If one were to have genuine political differences with every aspect of an administration’s policy, one is entitled to say so and to organize political action appropriately.  Such is what is expected in a democracy.  There was about a 75% chance that I would disagree with any policy of he Bush administration. But recently I’ve been struck by the intensity of the backlash against any policy advocated by the Obama administration as well as the intensity of the negative feelings people have about him, feelings are backed up by very specific allegations, but not specific evidence.  In other words, the people who feel such antipathy toward Obama do so because they know that he is godless, a liar, a socialist a a thief and possibly even a traitor.  But ether they can provide no specific details on anything or they repeat things that are repeated so often that it really doesn’t matter any more if they ay are true or not. Praying at the Game!

I’m on a Christians and the Bible kick. So here are a couple of stories about High School football and prayer. People brought these up to me recently, but they are old stories.

This email is about Jody McCloud who is principal at the Roane County High School in Kingston, Tennessee. In September, 2000, he opened a football game by saying that normally there would have been a prayer, but a Supreme Court decision had ended that…so he read a statement commenting on that and inviting people to pray anyway.

Christ in Christmas

I hate writing this so close to Christmas.  I am not a religious man, but Christmas is a time that gives me warm and fuzzy feelings, nonetheless.  It is a time when I come home to Richmond to be with my family and to celebrate an event I know best as told in the Gospel according to Luke, King James Version.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
