Consumers Union Seeks Support for Last Chance Effort on Health Care Reform

HospitalI got this today from Consumers Union Action Fund. It’s worth passing along.
Dear Michael,
In just days, the future of your health care could come down to only one vote.
We’re at a turning point with the Senate bill. The voice of real people must be heard to make sure the bill emerges with the protections that give you freedom and security rather than endless financial uncertainty.
The Senate bill will expand coverage and save lives–but it can and must be improved. The fact remains, if the Senate bill dies in the next week, we can’t fight on to make the final bill better as the process continues. A defeat in the Senate only serves the giant insurance companies, who will continue denying you coverage, denying you care when you need it, and making big profits doing so. Continue reading

Keeping college degrees affordable, attainable

According to the U.S. Department of Education, more than 400,000 qualified high school graduates a year delay or forgo enrolling in college due to financial barriers, amounting to 4.4 million students lost between 2001 and 2010.
For students who make it to college, financial pressures can lead students to drop out, or work more than 20 hours a week, which is proven to lower the odds of completing a degree. After graduation, the burden of student loan repayment often limits career options and the ability to save money or start a family. In 2008, two-thirds of all four-year college graduates borrowed, with an average debt of $23,186. The number of college graduates with at least $40,000 in student loan debt has increased tenfold in the past decade.

Avoid Black Friday Traffic and Crowds: Celebrate Buy Nothing Day

November 27 is Buy Nothing Day, a day to escape the consumerist madness of the holiday season by simply pledging to not take part in it. Avoid the holiday madness. Don’t get up at 4 am to make it the “After Thanksgiving Sale” at the local superstore. Read a book, take a bike ride, play a game, shoot some hoops, call old friends, meditate, do volunteer work or find some other activity that doesn’t add to the waste in our garbage dumps, exploit workers in the developing world or contribute further to the mountains of consumer debt so many struggle with.
