Martha Coakley for Senate

President Obama and Martha Coakley

I’m afraid that I have to admit that I agree with Scott Brown.  The negative campaign ads directed against him by the Coakley campaign have been a bit much. The other night I was watching tv and the negative ads came on, one after the other. Many of them featured a dark ominous voice talking about the terrible things that would happen if Brown got elected. Then Copley herself came on in an ad and, to be honest, her voice seemed just a bit strident and annoying. But don’t be deceived. This election is about substance, not style; Issues, not rhetoric!
The fact is that Scott Brown spouts a lot of general, feel good rhetoric that needs to be interrogated and challenged. Brown accuses his opponents of running ads that attack him but don’t discuss the issues, but where is the discussion of the issues in his ads? He’s endorsed by the Tea Party Patriots. I am opposed to virtually every point in their agenda and think they are a little nuts. If they endorse him, I want to know why. What issues does he agree with them on? The answer is far too many.

Is the Internet Addictive?

Here’s an interesting post from The Daily Dish, Andrew Sullivan’s blog.  The post responds to “Hijacking the Future Self” by Brian Knutson, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Stanford University. Sullivan concludes,

So what do you think? Is the Internet a drug? Is it addictive? I definitely think so, especially with mobile access.

My Top Ten Tweets of the Last Seven Days

My Twitter Feed

Here are my top 10 Tweets that contain links shortened using ow.ly during the past 7 days. How many typos can you spot? I really need to proof better before hitting send.
I didn’t post often this week, and yet the hit count was high. Perhaps because the disaster in Haiti increased twitter use overall. Indeed, the tweet with the highest number of hits was to a video of Pat Robertson idiotically attributing the earthquake in Haiti to a Haitian deal with the devil to break free from colonialism.  I’ve said elsewhere that this shows heartless he is, but the more I think about it the more it really shows how stupid he is.
The fact that the increased total number of hits on my tweets is due to interest in Haiti is also supported by the fact that the second, third in fourth most popular tweets are separated from this one by a meaningful margin, and are very closely bunched with one another.  They are links to a story about the death of Teddy Pendergrass, a call for sessions in the NITLE Tools for Teaching in the Global Age series, and a story about VoIP in the UAE.  On the other hand, other tweets about Haiti are in the next eight.
Anyway, here’s the top 10: Continue reading

Qantara’s goal is to build or rather consolidate the bridge between the North and South, and the East and West of the Mediterranean.

New Orleans Saints Songs!

The New Orleans Saints are having a pretty good year this year. They’re 13-3, heading into playoffs, and folks are excited. Their a little less excited about these last three games, but still excited.
Anyway, something that is probably pretty unique to New Orleans is that this winning season has inspired all kinds of music. Check it out. NOLA.com has a play list with probably two dozen or so songs. I bought a CD of such songs while I was down there over New Years, and few of those artists are on this lis, so that is another 10 or 11.
And then there are the YouTube videos: Continue reading

The Weary Kind

Ok, so maybe I’m just a little bit obsessed with this guy’s music, but I’ve got to share this video with you. This is “The Weary Kind“, written by T-Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham, and performed by the latter. Ryan Bingham is just amazing, but I’ve said that in this blog before. This song is one of his best. It’s haunting in itself, but I can’t imagine many people with a voice better able to convey to lyrics and sentiment in them than Bingham. But I don’t have to describe it, do I? Give it listen. Then rush on over to this page in Amazon.com where you can hear more samples and buy the music too. I suspect you will want to.
